Democrat Dave Min is projected to defeat Republican Scott Baugh in the race to succeed Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.), keeping the seat within Democratic control, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Min, a state senator, won the race to represent California’s 47th Congressional District, situated in Orange County.

Porter opted against running for reelection to instead try for the California Senate seat vacated by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), which is temporarily being filled by Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-Calif.).

Porter failed to make it into the general election, losing to Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Republican Steve Garvey in the primary.

Both Min and Baugh, a former California State Assembly Minority Leader, have run against Porter and lost. Baugh ran against Porter for her seat in 2022, but he lost to her by more than 3 points.

Min ran against her in 2018 during Porter’s first House bid, but he was unable to make it into the general election. Porter later won against then-Rep. Mimi Walters (R-Calif.).

President Biden won Porter’s district by 11 points in 2020.
