Heidelberg Materials extends Bedford roads deal

Heidelberg Materials UK has retained its contract to maintain and improve Bedford’s road network in a deal worth up to £30m.

The agreement with Bedford Borough Council begins this month and could run for up to five years. It follows a competitive tender process and extends a working relationship that began in 2013.

The contract covers the entirety of the council’s highways estate.

Work includes resurfacing of carriageways and footways, drainage clearance, kerb and ironwork replacement, and minor bridge repairs.

Heidelberg said it will continue delivering these services with support from its local supply chain.

Scott Cooper, contracting managing director at Heidelberg Materials, said the renewed contract reflected the “success of the relationship” between the two parties and marked the next phase of a “collaborative working arrangement” aimed at improving local roads and supporting the council’s sustainability and efficiency goals.

The company has laid more than 250,000 tonnes of asphalt since it was first appointed by the council.

Plans to build a multi-billion-pound theme park and resort near Bedford – confirmed yesterday – include a commitment to improve local infrastructure.
