For decades, the public toilet facilities in Amsterdam’s De Wallen Red Light District, perhaps the most well-known of the city’s three red light districts, consisted mainly of freestanding metal public urinals that were often dirty, smelly, and offered little privacy. No facilities were available for women or wheelchair users.
Recognizing the need for better toilet facilities in the Red Light District, Jan Otten, the long-time owner of the erotic theatre Casa Rosso and several other sex-related businesses, opened the Sexy Loo in 2020.
The Sexy Loo provides facilities designated for both men and women. Interior spaces are decorated with wallpaper, fake trees, and lamps to make it look like part of the streetscape outside. The toilet stall doors feature LED screens with life-sized videos of recordings of people who seem to be flirting with toilet visitors. The men’s restrooms also feature two urinals shaped like lips, as well as a long metal urination basin with a screen above showing women who appear to be watching guests relieve themselves.
However, the Sexy Loo is not just a well-decorated set of toilets. It also provides an additional wheelchair-accessible restroom with a baby changing station. An onsite attendant maintains the restrooms regularly, making this a clean and entertaining toilet located in the center of Amsterdam.
