In his press conference during draft weekend, Kansas City Chiefs Southwest Regional Scout Jason Lamb revealed the front office’s reasons for trading up to select seventh-round draft pick Brashard Smith.
“He’s (Brashard Smith) an explosive athlete. You see the quickness, you see the speed, I mean, running a 4.3 (40-yard dash),” said Lamb, “Just his overall athleticism and the dynamic ability he brings playing – being a former receiver, playing running back for the first time. This guy, when he gets the ball in his hands, he makes big plays happen, so it’s a lot of fun to watch.”
The former wide receiver turned running back spent the first three seasons of his college career at the University of Miami. He finished with 1,946 all-purpose yards in his three seasons with the Hurricanes.
“You see a guy (Brashard Smith) like that’s still out there, and you know how (General Manager) Brett (Veach) is with stuff – he sees a guy who he really wants – it was kind of a whole collaboration, a lot of the coaches,” said Lamb, “Knowing what he can bring to the offense and seeing him out there, you just have to go get your guy, so that’s kind of what we did right there.
Smith led SMU with 1,332 rushing yards on 235 carries and 14 rushing touchdowns, ranking fourth in the FBS with 1,977 all-purpose yards. He played in all 14 games with 10 starts last season.
