There’s a new Avatar on the block—and she’s an Earthbender. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickelodeon has announced a new sequel series, Avatar: Seven Havens. And yes, most importantly, the new project comes from original Avatar creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
DiMartino and Konietzko’s Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered on February 21st, 2005, and became a beloved juggernaut; the show produced a direct sequel, The Legend of Korra, and has been adapted into a poorly received live-action film and a middling Netflix series. Set in a fantastical world where some people can wield the powers of the elements, The Last Airbender focused on the title character, Aang, who awoke after being frozen in an iceberg to find he was not just the last Airbender, but also the Avatar, the reincarnated person who can wield all the elements.
The new animated series picks up with the Avatar after Korra. Deadline describes Seven Havens like this:
Avatar: Seven Havens is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm. A young Earthbender discovers she’s the new Avatar after Korra—but in this dangerous era, that title marks her as humanity’s destroyer, not its savior. Hunted by both human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin must uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens before civilization’s last strongholds collapse.
Nickelodeon has ordered 26 episodes of Seven Havens, which will be split into two 13-episode seasons (Book One and Book Two).
In a statement, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko—the joint heads of Avatar Studios—said, “When we created the original series, we never imagined we’d still be expanding the world decades later.. … This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery, and a whole new cast of amazing characters. Get ready to take another epic and emotional adventure!”
