Bills GM points to Patriots to defend highly-criticized draft strategy

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has faced considerable criticism for failing to draft an elite wide receiver to pair with reigning NFL MVP quarterback Josh Allen.

He was asked about the lack of urgency at wide receiver when appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show,” and he used legendary quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots’ old way of doing things as an argument for his approach to building the Bills’ 2025 roster.

“Look at Tom Brady, when we’re talking about some of these teams that have won Super Bowls,” said Beane. “Look at New England. How many great, historic receivers did they have in their Super Bowl teams? But the Patriots, they were good up front, they had a good quarterback, they usually had some kind of a run game, whether it was Corey Dillon, whether is was [Kevin] Faulk, [James] White.”

The Bills still have Khalil Shakir, and they’re hopeful 2024 first-round draft pick wide receiver Keon Coleman breaks out.

It remains to be seen if Beane’s strategy works for the Bills. There’s no doubt that Allen is capable of doing more with less. He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL with elite talent as a passer and runner. But can Allen elevate his game above Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson in the playoffs with less talent at receiver?

The answer to that question could decide the Bills’ future under Beane’s watch.
