Freaky Tales Trailer Gives Us Retro-Style Murder, Mayhem, and a Sword-Wielding NBA Star

We have a trailer for a new genre mashup called Freaky Tales, a Lionsgate film executive produced by hip-hop pioneer Too $hort that boasts an ensemble cast that includes Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Fantastic Four: First Steps), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One, Marvel’s Secret Invasion), Jay Ellis (Insecure, Top Gun: Maverick), Normani (a former member of the bank Fifth Harmony who had a song on Birds of Prey), Dominique Thorne (aka Riri in Wakanda Forever, Ironheart), Jack Champion (aka Spider in Avatar: The Way of Water), Ji-young Yoo (Expats), the late Angus Cloud (Abagail, Euphoria), and… wait for it… Tom Hanks(?!), who apparently plays a video store owner.

That’s quite the cast!

Here’s the logline:

Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters—an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector—on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.

The trailer sets up the film’s pulpy tone: very retro, very gory, and more than a little bit funny. There’s even some sword murdering that goes on, brought to you by an NBA superstar named Sleepy Floyd (Ellis), evoking memories of Kill Bill. Good times!

Freaky Tales was written and directed by Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden, and if the movie meets the expectations set up by this trailer, it looks like it will be a fun, action-packed watch. We’ll be able to see for ourselves when the film hits theaters on April 4, 2025.
