In a Perfect Bit of Casting, David Thewlis Will Play Holmes in CW’s Sherlock and Daughter

Clearly, every TV network worth its salt must have a Sherlock Holmes variant. CW (now without the “The”) is getting in on the game with the upcoming Sherlock and Daughter. Despite being a network previously well-known for a plethora of delightfully flawed superhero shows, CW has somehow scored an absolute casting coup, and David Thewlis will star as Sherlock Holmes.

Thewlis, for those less obsessed with his work, is possibly best known for playing Remus Lupin in those films about the boy wizard. But he’s been a highly acclaimed actor at least since Mike Leigh’s upsetting 1993 film Naked, and has appeared in films from Seven Years in Tibet to Wonder Woman to, amusingly, Enola Holmes 2. He is John Dee in The Sandman (pictured above) and the Shame Wizard in Big Mouth. In short, he is capable of just about anything.

Here’s the premise of Sherlock & Daughter:

The mystery thriller series Sherlock & Daughter, puts Sherlock Holmes (David Thewlis) out of his comfort zone, mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends. Enter: young American Amelia (Blu Hunt, The Originals, The New Mutants). After her mother’s mysterious murder, she learns her missing father may be the legendary detective. Despite wildly different backgrounds and attitudes, the pair must work together to solve a global conspiracy, crack her mother’s murder, and find out for sure if she really is Sherlock’s daughter. International Emmy® Award-winning Dougray Scott (Batwoman, Crime) also stars as Holmes’ nemesis, Moriarty.

(If you primarily think of Dougray Scott as the prince in Ever After, I’m sorry to report that he’s very good at being creepy now. )

Sherlock & Daughter is created by Brendan Foley (Cold Courage), and has James Duff (creator of The Closer) as showrunner. The show’s writers include Micah War Dog Wright (who has written for many video games) and Shelly Goldstein (a writer on Laverne & Shirley!).
