Whether you swear by or strongly oppose injectables and fillers, chances are you’ve been at least curious about one of them—be it Botox, lip, or cheek filler.
But jawline filler? Until recently, this particular tweakment has flown more under the radar, even for people very much in the yay-injectables camp. Reshaping one’s jawline area just isn’t as sexy as having pillowy lips, or as satisfying as smoothing a creased forehead. And since we’re mostly talking about bone structure, the jawline just seems like a facial feature we can’t easily customize, unlike areas better padded and sculpted by fat and muscle.
In the past, that was mostly true. Even as we’ve invented ever more ways to adjust the upper two-thirds of the face, the jawline area has lagged behind. Until just a few years ago, dermal fillers weren’t even FDA-approved for use in the lower face. Instead, sculpting the jaw and chin areas using hyaluronic acid fillers was an off-label procedure, meaning a skilled professional could do it, but only using a filler that had been FDA-approved for another part of the face.
That’s recently changed, and jawline fillers have gone mainstream, rapidly gaining popularity as injectors perfect techniques that can accomplish seriously head-turning transformations. Jawline filler isn’t just for improving structural asymmetry; it can bring forward a recessed chin or minimize a double chin, visually slim your jawline by adjusting its angles, redefine the areas where your jaw fades into your neck, offset lower-face volume loss, and sometimes even reduce the appearance of jowls. Some people even find that some expert jawline contouring makes them reconsider rhinoplasty. (A nose can look smaller once a jawline is better proportioned to it.)
For all our culture’s current infatuation with minimally invasive interventions—from lip flips to hairline Botox—it turns out that small adjustments to the jawline area can have an even bigger impact on our overall appearance. Of course, as with all tweakments, getting jawline filler still isn’t something to take lightly, and it’s not for everyone. If you’re feeling a little jawline-filler curious, here’s a quick primer on everything you need to know.

What exactly is jawline filler?
Jawline fillers involve the use of dermal fillers, safe gel substances that are injected beneath the skin in order to create volume, contour, or tighten. Usually, hyaluronic acid fillers formulated with a thicker/firmer consistency are used for sculpting the jawline, since they best mimic the look and feel of bone. Hyaluronic acid fillers are also adjustable, which means injectors can add more or even dissolve some to arrive at your exact desired results. Two popular hyaluronic-acid fillers FDA-approved for chin augmentation are Juvéderm Voluma XC and Restylane Defyne; Restylane Lyft is also commonly used.
