Now that’s more like it. If, like me, you were underwhelmed by the first teaser for James Gunn’s Superman, you may find yourself much more pleased with this full, official trailer, which makes Superman (David Corenswet) defend his actions—to Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) in full journalist mode. Watching Superman get defensive about doing the right thing was somehow a thing I didn’t even know I wanted from a Superman movie.
And there’s a lot more to chew on here, including a considerable amount of time spent on María Gabriela De Faría’s Engineer. You know she’s bad because she punches Superman’s dog, Krypto. That is not acceptable. But she’s also a fascinating character, at least in the comics, and I hope she retains some of that complexity in this film.
The gang’s all here: Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., and Nicholas Hoult as a Lex Luthor who is just so mad that Superman is “the focal point of the entire world’s conversation.”
And there’s this very good boy, who looks slightly less uncanny valley this time around.

Superman is written and directed by James Gunn, and is in theaters July 11th.
