Old Navy's 4th of July Sale Is Here–And I Tried Everything On

Old Navy’s 4th of July sale is upon us, and while the retailer is already known for its affordable prices, I never sneeze at a deal, and this year’s offerings are pretty swell (tees and tanks start $4 and you can score swimwear for under $10). I should know–I started shopping there back in high school, and I’m pushing 40, so you do the math. My mother and I would roam the aisles, adding $2 flip flops to our bags, and one of my core memories was buying my first (of many) tankinis there with her encouragement. I recently returned to those hallowed dressing rooms on a shopping trip to stock up on summer trends and I fell hard for a few items–including a super comfy (and surprisingly supportive) neon pink one-piece and a skirt with built-in shorts that’s giving tenniscore to the max. Ahead are some of the best of Old Navy’s fourth of July clothing sales, plus what they look like on.

First up, overalls. Timeless, effortless, protectors of thigh-chafing. What more could you want in a steamy weather ‘fit? How about for them to be half off? A lot of overalls I’ve tried are a bit tight in, well, all the wrong areas but these are perfectly roomy.

As previously declared, I’ve long worn Old Navy bathing suits, and this one is a new fave. (If you’re not into pink, it comes in blue and black). Despite being on sale for under $20, it’s held up after multiple washes and pool dips, and has light padding to keep the girls G-rated and lifted. I paired it with this viral mid-rise white maxi skirt (the staple is the It item this season), and I was beach ready in seconds.

While I tend to avoid anything bodycon, especially in the summer when I don’t like anything clinging to me (sand included), this crochet (another key trend) knit dress was calling. It had just enough give in the belly that it didn’t feel suffocating and the straps are thick enough to hide your average bra. I recommend sizing up for a little extra breathing room. (I’m typically a small, but this is a medium).

When I tried this on, the friend I was shopping with said I looked like I was 21. I’m not sure if she was referring to the fact that I was leaning into the current tennis dress trend dominated by twenty-something celebrities or if there was something youthful about the way I bounded out of the fitting room, excited to be in a skirt with a silky liner. Either way, I bought her a pair of cute confetti glitter flip flops as a thank you. 10/10 would recommend this ‘fit if you suffer from chub rub, play sports, or just want to look like you do.

Another versatile no-brainer, this flouncy mid dress feels like pajamas on, has adjustable straps, and is on sale for under $12.

This easy shirt dress (again, with pockets), helped me live my best coastal grandma, Nancy Meyers moment–if only in the dressing room.

And now for a true wardrobe workhorse: a fit and flare mini with pockets. Just add a sweater for some prep points. (The only demerit is it calls for a strapless bra).

Linen dresses are all the rage and I adore this striped option’s sweetheart neckline. It’s currently half off in the prettiest lime shade. Pair it with ballet flats, and you’ve got yourself an outfit that looks like you tried, but feels like you’re still in bed.

Okay, she’s a little wrinkled in the photo, but one shot of a steamer later and I had myself a versatile shirt that covered my arms (points for a tiny bit of sun protection) and kept me cool on a very steamy day. I’m also a diehard skinny jean devotee, and Old Navy’s ultra stretchy Rockstars are the best budget-friendly version IMHO.

Okay, so the puff sleeve shirt is sold out, but I was really feeling this wide-brim hat and loose-fitting denim shorts–both on super sale for the 4th.
