It’s hard to remember a time when Spears was not a part of our every day cultural lexicon, or to remember that when she burst onto the pop scene with “Baby One More Time” in 1998, she was barely 17-years-old. Which means that we, you and me, all of us, have quite literally watched Spears grow up under the spotlight.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears described the traumas she’s been through throughout her life, both before she was famous and afterwards. “I feel like I’ve been underwater for so long, only rarely swimming up to the surface to gasp for air and a little food,” she wrote in the book, published soon after she was granted release from her 13-year conservatorship.
In the 2000s, the world watched as Spears was publicly humiliated after her breakup from Justin Timberlake, followed by a public mental health crisis in 2007, and then the beginnings of the conservatorship in 2008.
But in the 1990s, when Britney Spears was young and just at the beginning of her career, she looks so different from the tragic figure we tend to picture her as today.
