Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) on Wednesday joined the viral debate over who would be the victor of a hypothetical fight between 100 men and a gorilla.

In a video posted to the social platform X, Sheehy said he had done “a lot of constituent engagement lately.”

“It has been a great time coming off two weeks of recess, but we’ve had some serious questions lately about the likelihood of a fight between 100 men and a gorilla, and who would win that,” Sheehy said.

“I think it’s pretty clear, anyone who’s … been involved in close combat before will understand that the 100 men would clearly win,” he added.

The debate has gone viral over multiple platforms, including X and TikTok. According to The Guardian, its origins appear to lie in a 2020 question from a Reddit user, but the debate has exploded in prominence within the last week.

Zoo Miami communications director Ron Magill told Rolling Stone in an article published Tuesday that the 100 men “should be able to overtake the gorilla and inflict enough blunt force trauma combined with severe twisting of the head and neck while simultaneously inflicting severe abdominal punches, that the gorilla would eventually succumb to either a broken neck, internal organ damage, or asphyxiation.” However, he said such an outcome would only come about if those 100 men “are willing to accept” facing intense risk to their personal safety.

“The gorilla would eventually get overwhelmed by the superior intellect and speed of the humans,” Sheehy said in the video, but the Montana senator later added that the group would face “a high casualty rate.”
