Study rates Ohio State men's basketball as fourth-most valuable in nation

So much of the ecosystem surrounding college basketball is up for sale these days, but the actual teams are not.

If they were, however, and you could purchase a college team, the Wall Street Journal thinks it would cost quite a bit to buy the Ohio State men’s basketball team. According to a study conducted by Ryan Brewer, an associate professor of finance at Indiana University Columbus, the Buckeyes are the fourth-most valuable program in the nation.

Brewer’s study assigns the Ohio State men’s basketball team an enterprise value of $262 million. That ranks behind only No. 1 North Carolina ($378 million), No. 2 Duke ($370 million) and No. 3 Indiana ($279 million).

According to the Wall Street Journal, Brewer studies program revenues and cash flows to make financial projections about programs as if they were businesses. On the women’s side, Ohio State’s basketball program ranks No. 38 in the study at $30,000,000.

While the men’s basketball program is fourth in the nation, the Ohio State football program ranked No. 1 in his similar study for that sport. Brewer put the program at $1,957,000,000.

Ohio State is putting the finishing touches on its 2025-26 roster and added a commitment from Wright State transfer forward Brandon Noel earlier this week.
