‘Superman’ Action Figures Revealed Along With Inside Look At New Film


James Gunn’s Superman starring David Corenswet is being spotlighted on Superman Day Friday with a behind-the-scenes look at the film and the reveal of the superhero adventure’s upcoming toy line.

Written for the screen and directed by Gunn, Superman, in which Corenswet plays Clark Kent/The Man of Steel, opens in theaters on July 11. The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl.

Superman also stars Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Skyler Gisnodo as Jimmy Olson and Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific.

Several new toys were revealed on Friday in celebration of Superman Day by McFarlane Toys, including 7-inch action figures in its DC Multiverse Line of Superman with Krypto the Superdog, Lex Luthor, Metamorpho, Mister Terrific and a Kaiju Monster.

The company is also releasing retro-stylized 4.5-inch figures from its retro DC Super Powers line, which features figures of Superman, Metamorpho, Green Lantern and Mister Terrific. The DC Superpowers line also includes a Fortress of Solitude Playset.

The figures, playset and other Superman toy items are avaialable for pre-order through MacFarlane Toys and several online retailers.

A variety of retailers have the 7-inch DC Multiverse figure of Superman and other single figures listed for $24.99 and the Kaiji mega-figure for $49.99. The figures are expected to be released in June or July.

Superman Behind-The-Scenes Video Offers New Look At Film

Also in celebration of Superman Day, Warner Bros.’ DC Movies division released a video featurette on Friday offering a new look at Superman from a behind-the-scenes perspective.

“Being a child, I loved the purity of Superman,” writer-director James Gunn says at the beginning of the Superman Day – Behind the Scenes Look video posted on YouTube (see below). “It was a time when I was starting to understand what movies were.”

As Gunn was descibring the effect Superman had on him as a child, video of Christopher Reeve’s 1978 version of the Man of Steel from Superman was shown.

The featurette also includes interviews with Superman producer Peter Safran and stars David Cornswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi and Nathan Fillion. The behind-the-scenes look also includes looks at the sets from the film, including the Fortress of Solitude and the Daily Planet.

“It’s the beginning of a whole new adventure and a whole new universe,” Corenswet said in the featurette.

Superman opens in theaters on July 11.
