Takashi Miike’s Next Film Will Have Charli xcx as Star and Producer

Charli xcx’s move into movies continues. The Grammy-winning pop star is already set to produce and/or star in a file of films, including A24’s The Moment, which is based on her own idea. Now, Variety reports, she’s teaming up with another kind of icon: Charli xcx will star in and produce the next film from Audition director Takashi Miike.

As is so often the case with big, unexpected announcements, no plot details have been announced, though Variety notes that the screenplay is being written by Ross Evans. Variety also notes, mildly, that “Miike is known for his depictions of extreme violence.”

The director of Audition isn’t only about violence, though; he’s also executive director of the upcoming Nyaight of the Living Cat series, which is described, at least in part, as a comedy. So the question we have to ask here is: Are we getting Happiness of the Katakuris Miike, or Hara-Kiri Miike? Or is Charli xcx about to become the new Visitor Q?

Charli xcx was everywhere last year on account of her award-winning album Brat and the subsequent Brat Summer. Since then, she’s begun a move into film that already includes a long list of projects: 100 Nights of Hero, from Julia Jackman; the horror remake Faces of Death; a new film from Gregg Araki called I Want Your Sex with Olivia Wilde; Pete Ohs and Jeremy O. Harris’ Erupcja; Sacrifice, an “adventure comedy” from Romain Gavras; and a thriller, The Gallerist, co-starring Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and directed by Cathy Yan.

Miike is known for Audition, Ichi the Killer, The Great Yokai War, 13 Assassins, a Zatoichi reboot, and many more films; he’s directed more than 100 movies. His next, Sham, premieres at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. icon-paragraph-end
