Trump insists he and Vance are not weird but ‘solid rocks’ as Harris proposes ‘billionaire minimum tax’: Live

Donald Trump sat for an hour-long, town hall with Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Wednesday, bashing Democratic rival Kamala Harris at every turn, less than a week before they go face-to-face at a debate.

Trump slammed Harris’s record at the border, and promised the “largest deportation” in US history if he is elected. He also took aim at her economic policy, warning that the country would wind up in a “1929-style depression” if she wins in November.

Trump also boasted about members of Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s extended family sharing a photo wearing T-shirts in support of Trump.

The town hall was held in the battleground state of Pennsylvania — one of a few states both campaigns are laser-focused on winning.

A CNN poll found Harris leading in Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia and Nevada, while Trump leads in Arizona, and the two are tied in Pennsylvania.

Earlier in the day, at a campaign stop in North Hampton, New Hampshire, Harris unveiled more of her economic agenda — promising a tax relief for small businesses. The vice president argued that setting a “billionaire minimum tax” would make the tax code more fair to small businesses by making larger corporations pay a “fair share.”

Trump lays in on ABC News days before his debate against Harris

The former president then assailed ABC News, which will host the debate in six days between Trump and Kamala Harris.

“The most dishonest network. The meanest, the nastiest. But that’s what I was presented with,” Trump said.

He accused the network of giving the “softest” interview to President Biden.

Trump warned of a ‘1929-style depression’ if Harris is elected

02:52 , Kelly Rissman

About 45 mintues into the town hall, Trump discussed Harris’ economic policies.

“I gave you the biggest tax cuts in the history of our country,” he claimed, warning what he believed would happen if Harris reversed his tax cuts.

“This country will end up in a depression if she becomes president, like 1929. She has no idea what the hell she’s doing,” he said.

Trump then took a jab at Harris’ father, Donald Harris, calling the Stanford professor a “Marxist teacher of economics”

Trump offers gloomy world view during town hall

02:39 , Kelly Rissman

“She wants to be politically correct,” Trump said about Harris. “We can’t be politically correct anymore.”

He once again claimed that “October 7 would have never happened” if he had been the commander in chief at the time. “The whole world was a safe place” when he was president, he added.

“The world is blowing up. And when you look at Ukraine and you look at Russia, we are potentially getting ready…we’re heading into World War III territory,” Trump continued.

Mosquito interrupts Trump’s town hall

In the middle of groaning about President Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 race, Trump got distracted — by a mosquito.

Trump clarifies he wants to win New Hampshire after a leaked email suggested his campaign is “pulling back” from the state

02:25 , Kelly Rissman

The former president tried to reclaim his campaign’s focus on New Hampshire.

”We really wanna win New Hampshire,” Trump said.

His comment comes one day after an email was leaked suggesting that the Trump campaign doesn’t believe the state is “winnable.”

A former Republican party vice chair in Massachusetts, sent an email to volunteers stating that the campaign “no longer thinks New Hampshire is winnable and is pulling back from state,” the Boston Globe first reported.

Trump takes a jab at Tim Walz

02:16 , Kelly Rissman

Earlier today, eight relatives of the Democratic vice presidential nominee posed for a photo wearing “Walz’s for Trump” shirts, and standing in front of a “Trump 2024” flag that also reads: “Take America back.”

On Wednesday evening, the former president noted this.

“His brother endorsed me — and his whole family!” Trump said.

Speaking about Tim Walz, Trump said: “There is something weird with that guy. JD is not weird.”

Trump offers familiar claims about the border

02:13 , Kelly Rissman

“We did great in 2016. We did much better in 2020, we got millions of more votes. But there has never been enthusiasm like we have now,” Trump said after the audience burst out into a “USA!” chant.

The former president almost instantly turned to the border, an area for which he typically criticizes the Biden-Harris administration. Trump repeated familiar claims about migrants, alleging that they are coming into the country from prisons, mental institutions, and “very bad places.” He added that they are “destroying our country.”

“We have to do the largest deportation” in the history of the US, he added.

Trump appears on Fox News town hall

02:05 , Kelly Rissman

At 9pm, Donald Trump joined Sean Hannity in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for a town hall.

Hannity described Kamala Harris’ popularity as a “long-lived honey moon phase.”

Harris hopes to win on vibes, the anchor said, before adding: “The vibes haven’t been the same since Donald Trump left office.”

The crowd cheered and applauded as Trump walked in. The former president often stopping to glance up at the crowd and join in with claps of his own.

Nothing will change after the Georgia school shooting, no matter what Biden says

Eric Garcia writes:

President Joe Biden, who authored the 1994 ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004, once again tried to appeal to Republicans’ better angels.

“After decades of inaction, Republicans in Congress must finally say ‘enough is enough’ and work with Democrats to pass common-sense gun safety legislation,” he said in a statement not long after Wednesday’s shooting.

But nobody should be under any delusions that anything will fundamentally change when it comes to guns in the United States, at least for the near future.

US accuses Russian state media of enlisting right-wing influencers to meddle in election

Thursday 5 September 2024 00:10 , Oliver O’Connell

Alex Woodward reports:

Two Russian nationals who work for Russian state-controlled media outlet RT — Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva — were also charged with conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Prosecutors allege they relied on a Tennessee-based company and contracted with US-based social media influencers to target specific demographics and regions as part of a calculated effort to subvert the election.

That company — TENET Media, which is not mentioned by name in the indictment — includes a constellation of well-known right-wing influencers, including Tim Pool, Dave Rubin and Benny Johnson, among others.

RT employees helped publish nearly 2,000 English-language videos on TikTok, Instagram, X and YouTube, where they have racked up 16 million views, according to prosecutors.

The companies and influencers “never disclosed to the influencers or their millions of dollars its ties to RT or the Russian government,” and instead claimed they used a “private investor” who was in fact a “fictitious persona,” according to Garland.

Some Republicans are secretly rooting for Donald Trump to lose the election in November for the sake of their party, according to reports.

Some of the GOP – including long-standing members who are publicly enthusiastic about a second Trump presidency – are secretly hoping the White House will go to his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, according to Politico.

Last week, conservative commentator Erick Erickson said on X that many Republicans are rooting for a Harris presidency with a GOP-controlled Senate in order to save their party.

Trump accused of deliberately choosing ‘sundown’ towns with racist histories for his rallies

Wednesday 4 September 2024 23:10 , Oliver O’Connell

During a campaign stop at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Howell, Michigan, Donald Trump suggested that deputies there should be deployed to the majority-Black city of Detroit.

“I’d love to have them working there during the election,” he told the group on August 20, standing in front of law enforcement officials and squad cars.

A week later, Trump held a “town hall” in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The next day, he rallied in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He will speak in the town of Mosinee, Wisconsin, on September 7.

These relatively small cities — spread across midwestern swing states and far from dense metropolitan areas — all have one thing in common: They are former “sundown” towns, where threats of Jim Crow-era violence enforced racial segregation.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will mark the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks by visiting Ground Zero in New York, the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, the White House confirmed on Wednesday.

“You will see the president and vice president next week together as they mourn the thousands of lives that were lost on that day and also the first responders who obviously put their lives on the line to protect Americans on that day,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

The New York Times reports that former president Donald Trump is also considering a visit to the site of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.

On the preceding evening, he and Harris will have faced off in their first presidential debate in Philadelphia.

The anniversary marks the day when hijackers flew planes into the Pentagon in Virginia and both towers of the World Trade Center, with a fourth plane crashing into a field in Pennsylvania.

Last year Biden marked the anniversary in Alaska as he was returning from a trip to Asia. First Lady Jill Biden attended the Pentagon ceremony and Harris visited the September 11 Memorial Museum in at the former site of the Twin Towers.

As Harris and Walz hit the campaign trail, Trump spends afternoon posting video messages

Wednesday 4 September 2024 20:08 , Oliver O’Connell

With Kamala Harris and Tim Walz out on the campaign trail, you might be wondering what Donald Trump is doing.

At 5.30pm he will pre-tape a one-hour town hall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with Sean Hannity of Fox News which will be broadcast at 9pm this evening. Nothing captures the spontaneity of being asked questions by a pre-vetted audience than taping it almost four hours in advance.

To kill time until then, the former president has been busily posting videos to his Truth Social account. By 3pm he was up to nine videos and a TikTok.

First up, he complained about the workings of the justice system, claiming the Justice Department had violated its own policy by “going after” him in the 60 days leading up to the first votes being cast on September 6. The DOJ began prosecuting Trump in 2023.

He then lashed out at “Comrade Harris” over the border, before accusing the vice president of running away from her record, including this odd line: “Why did you change all 14 of your major policy ideas just for the purpose of an election. And we know one thing, she’ll never do it, because she’s a… Marxist, and Marxists don’t believe in the Trump philosophy. Not gonna happen. We’re not gonna let her win.”

In the next video, he called her a Communist. If you’re wondering what the difference is, it’s that Marxism is a philosophy, while communism is a system of government based on Marxist principles.

Trump, who complains about everything from dishwashers to airports to crowd sizes, began his next video with a tiny little bit of projection, saying: “COMRADE KAMALA HARRIS DOES NOTHING BUT COMPLAIN…”

Hitting his stride (these were all recorded back to back as evidenced by the knot of his tie), Trump did a quick lap of election issues, ranging from the economy, inflation, the border, “respect for our nation”, and preventing the Third World War and a 1929 recession.

In the two final shortest videos, he espoused “TRUMP CASH vs KAMALA CRASH!” and reminded viewers of his tax proposals for social security and tips.

DOJ seizes 32 internet domains used by Russian government entities to interfere in 2024 election

Wednesday 4 September 2024 19:02 , Oliver O’Connell

The Justice Department has announced the ongoing seizure of 32 internet domains used in Russian government-directed foreign malign influence campaigns colloquially referred to as “Doppelganger,” in violation of US money laundering and criminal trademark laws.

As alleged in an unsealed affidavit, the Russian companies Social Design Agency (SDA), Structura National Technology (Structura), and ANO Dialog, operating under the direction and control of the Russian Presidential Administration, and in particular First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Vladilenovich Kiriyenko, used these domains, among others, to covertly spread Russian government propaganda with the aim of reducing international support for Ukraine, bolstering pro-Russian policies and interests, and influencing voters in US and foreign elections, including the 2024 Presidential Election.

“The Justice Department is seizing 32 internet domains that the Russian government and Russian government-sponsored actors have used to engage in a covert campaign to interfere in and influence the outcome of our country’s elections,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“As alleged in our court filings, President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, including Sergei Kiriyenko, directed Russian public relations companies to promote disinformation and state-sponsored narratives as part of a campaign to influence the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. An internal planning document created by the Kremlin states that a goal of the campaign is to secure Russia’s preferred outcome in the election. The sites we are seizing today were filled with Russian government propaganda that had been created by the Kremlin to reduce international support for Ukraine, bolster pro-Russian policies and interests, and influence voters in the United States and other countries. Our actions today make clear that the Justice Department will be aggressive in countering and disrupting attempts by the Russian government, or any other malign actor, to interfere in our elections and undermine our democracy.”

Garland announces case over interference in 2024 election by employees of Russian media outlet RT

Wednesday 4 September 2024 18:56 , Oliver O’Connell

Attorney General Merrick Garland has laid out the Department of Justice’s case against Russian entities who have sought to interfere with the 2024 elections. This includes broadcaster RT.

“The Justice Department has charged two employees of RT, a Russian state-controlled media outlet, in a $10 million scheme to create and distribute content to US audiences with hidden Russian government messaging,” said Garland. “The Justice Department will not tolerate attempts by an authoritarian regime to exploit our country’s free exchange of ideas in order to covertly further its own propaganda efforts, and our investigation into this matter remains ongoing.”

“Our approach to combating foreign malign influence is actor-driven, exposing the hidden hand of adversaries pulling strings of influence from behind the curtain,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. “As alleged in today’s indictment, Russian state broadcaster RT and its employees, including the charged defendants, co-opted online commentators by funneling them nearly $10 million to pump pro-Russia propaganda and disinformation across social media to US audiences. The Department will not tolerate foreign efforts to illegally manipulate American public opinion by sowing discord and division.”

An indictment charging Russian nationals Kostiantyn Kalashnikov, 31, also known as Kostya, and Elena Afanasyeva, 27, also known as Lena, with conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and conspiracy to commit money laundering was unsealed today in the Southern District of New York.

Kalashnikov and Afanasyeva are at large.

IN FOCUS: Elon Musk is wrong – high-status males shouldn’t be in charge of anything

Wednesday 4 September 2024 18:50 , Oliver O’Connell

Eleanor Mills writes:

Surprise, surprise. Elon Musk, the self-proclaimed ultimate alpha and sometimes the world’s richest man (I’m sure he can’t stand it when his stock price dips and he isn’t, poor thing) has declared that “only high-status men” and “alpha divergent” or “aneurotypical” people should be in charge of the world.

I’m sure there are better-qualified people than myself to discuss the point he (albeit clumsily) makes about those with neurodivergent thinking. However, as for his belief that high-status men should be in charge of the world, well, having been surrounded by them keeping the seats of power warm from the boardroom and beyond, for most of my life, I am definitely qualified to pass judgement on that.

Ex-Trump adviser demands Fox News stop using Harris’s first name because it ‘personalizes her’

Wednesday 4 September 2024 18:35 , Oliver O’Connell

Donald Trump’s former adviser has urged Fox News pundits to “cut the Kamala c**p” and stop referring to the vice president by her first name because it “personalizes her.”

Peter Navarro, a former trade adviser to Trump when he was in office, went on a three-minute rant about “Kamala” while appearing on Steve Bannon’s War Room on Tuesday.

Navarro warned Fox News and Newsmax hosts that in referring to Harris by her first name, they “personalize her” and it is not doing Trump any favors in the presidential campaign.

Rhian Lubin has the story.

Trump praises pro-soccer player Brittany Mahomes for defending him

Wednesday 4 September 2024 17:30 , Oliver O’Connell

Donald Trump has praised pro-soccer player Brittany Mahomes for defending him online after liking one of his Instagram posts from August 13 that outlined the Republican platform.

Mahomes, wife of the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, was called out by other Instagram users, some criticizing her for seemingly supporting Trump’s 13-point proposal, others saying her actions could negatively impact her friendship with Taylor Swift, the Grammy-winning artist who supported Joe Biden in 2020.

Amid the blunt backlash, Brittany issued a statement, slamming all the adults who had it in their hearts to send hate.

“I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult you have to have some deep-rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood,” she wrote on her Instagram story on August 23. “There’s no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well.”

While Mahomes has not endorsed a candidate in the 2024 election, Trump took to Truth Social and wrote this morning:

I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country. With Crime and Illegal Immigration totally out of control, INFLATION Ravaging all Americans, and a World that is laughing at the stupidity of our hapless “leaders,” it is nice to see someone who loves our Country, and wants to save it from DOOM. Just in: Biden to accuse Russia of election interference

Wednesday 4 September 2024 16:58 , James Liddell

The Biden administration is due to accuse Russia of attempting to influence the 2024 election through propaganda being pumped out from state-run media, it will announce on Wednesday.

It is expected that the US will denounce the Kremlin’s alleged covert campaign with Russian news outlet RT being a key focus of the announcement, sources told CNN. It marks Biden’s second attempt to curtail RT’s supposed influence over the electorate since July.

Propaganda is being spread through both American and non-American voice, according to the sources.

Trump lawyers file appeal after judge refused to move hush money case to federal court

Wednesday 4 September 2024 15:40 , James Liddell

Donald Trump’s lawyers have filed an appeal after being denied a bid to move the former president’s New York criminal case from state to federal court.

Trump’s legal team, led by attorney Todd Blanche, appealed to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, according to a notice filed Tuesday night.

It comes after District Judge Alvin Hellerstein rejected Trump’s latest long-shot request earlier in the day to move his hush money case to the Southern District of New York on Tuesday.

Trump was found guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels in May.

The Republican presidential nominee hoped to overturn the guilty verdict and postpone his sentencing, which will take place in New York on September 18.

Scarborough: Trump ‘flip flops’ over pro-life stance after striking ‘cynical deal’ with Christians

Wednesday 4 September 2024 15:20 , James Liddell

MSNBC’s Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough accused Donald Trump of “flip-flopping” over his abortion stance, after claiming former president “shifted to be pro-life” to gain the Christian vote.

After previously boasting of his role in Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, last week Trump told NBC News that he thinks Florida’s current law, which bans abortions after six weeks, is too short.

His statement angered one of his most loyal support bases: the evangelicals.

“You have Donald Trump flip-flopping, now saying he’s going to be a champion of women’s reproductive rights,” Scarborough said on Wednesday morning. You have him saying that he will vote against the six-week bill in Florida, the six-week ban in Florida. He, of course, keeps shifting, he keeps going back and forth.”

He added that the former president was a “pro-choice candidate, who transparently shifted to be pro-life” in order to attain the vote from devout Christians, which he branded as a “cynical brain”.

Kari Lake gets much-need cash injection from PAC

Kari Lake is receiving a huge financial boost as she views to defeat Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego in the Arizona Senate primaries in November.

Win It Back PAC will inject $12 million into buying adverts on Wednesday for a suite of TV commercials in English and Spanish in Phoenix and Tucson regions.

Lake’s total TV ad spend of $24.5 million is dwarfed by Gallego and his allies who are set to spend nearly $83 million on the airwaves.

The Hill’s analysis of 50 polls places the Democrat more than seven points ahead of his Republican rival; 49.3 per cent to 41.9 per cent.

Poll: Trump, Harris in stalemate across three swing states

Wednesday 4 September 2024 14:23 , James Liddell

Three swing states are still up for grabs as Kamala Harris and Donald Trump continue to battle to find favor with the electorate.

A new CNN poll of six of the seven swing states concluded that the Democratic presidential nominee is currently leading her Republican rival in four of the battlegrounds.

The survey said that Harris has a clear lead in Wisconsin (50 per cent to 44 percent) and Michigan (48 per cent to 43 per cent).

However, in Georgia and Nevada, the vice president is said to lead by just one point – 48 per cent to 47 per cent in each.

The pair are tied at 47 per cent all in Pennsylvania, while Trump leads in Arizona 49 per cent to Harris’s 44 per cent, as per CNN’s poll.

‘RFK Jr must remain in Michigan ballot,’ judge says

Wednesday 4 September 2024 14:21 , James Liddell

Robert F Kennedy Jr must stay on Michigan’s ballot, a state judge ruled on Tuesday.

RFK Jr revealed last month that he would be culling his independent campaign, instead endorsing Donald Trump’s election bid.

He announced that he was trying to take his name off the ticket across swing states over fears he could draw votes away from the former president.

After previously being rejected in his effort to withdraw his name from the battleground state of Michigan, RFK Jr filed a lawsuit against Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson on Friday.

Now, he has again been denied permission to remove his name from the state’s ballot.

Poll: Trump trails behind Harris among Gen Z voters

Wednesday 4 September 2024 14:07 , James Liddell

Half of Gen Z voters say they’ll vote for Kamala Harris, according to a new poll of under 30-year-olds.

A new survey commissioned by NBC News and SurveyMonkey surveyed people born between 1997 and 2012 (12 to 27-year-olds) on which way they’ll likely vote ahead of Americans flooding to the ballots come November 5.

It found that 50 per cent of responders would vote for Democrat, while just 33 per cent would vote for the Republicans – as Harris clinches a 17 point lead with the younger demographic.

Ten per cent say that would note vote, whole six per cent have said that they’d choose someone other than the two main presidential candidates.

Wednesday 4 September 2024 14:00 , James Liddell

The ‘J6 Awards Gala’ which was scheduled to take place at Trump’s National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey on Thursday has been postponed – indefinitely.

The fundraising event for defendants of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol was due to be hosted by Stand in the Gap, a not-for-profit offering support to those entangled in the uprising.

“The funds raised will provide much-needed assistance to the January 6th defendants who continue to face significant challenges,” the group’s website reads.

The event was initially delayed in August, after event organizer LJ Fino told Fox Business that there were “scheduling conflicts of invited guest speakers”.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was lined up on the speaking roster. Trump was invited; he is yet to formally accept.

“ALERT: Lara’s and Tiffany Trump’s X accounts have been hacked. Do NOT click on any links or purchase any tokens shared from their profiles,” the official World Liberty Financial account @worldlibertyfi broadcast on X.

Trump’s son Eric was quick to declare the posts touting the fake family crypto venture as a “scam” on his own X.

Wednesday 4 September 2024 12:15 , James Liddell

White House Press Secretary shut down an “insane” probe from a Fox News reporter who claimed that Kamala Harris puts on a fake Southern accent.

The former president has been accused by some right-leaning political pundits of speaking with a Southern twang during her Detroit, Michigan, campaign rally on Monday.

“Since when does the vice president have what sounds like a Southern accent,” Peter Doocy asked during a press conference on Tuesday.

Wednesday 4 September 2024 11:33 , James Liddell

With the future of abortion rights resting on November ballots, polling shows that clear majorities of both Republican and Democratic voters in six swing states reject the idea that the government should be criminalizing abortion care, and overwhelmingly want their elected officials to protect access to birth control.

Trump ‘laziest’ campaigner in presidential history, O’Donnell says

Wednesday 4 September 2024 11:11 , James Liddell

MSNBC anchor Lawrence O’Donnell attacked Donald Trump and his vice president pick JD Vance for “doing nothing” on Labor Day.

“With only 64 days in the campaign, candidates are usually campaigning very hard,” O’Donnell began on Tuesday’s episode of The Last Word.

“But not Donald Trump; the laziest campaigner in modern history.”

O’Donnell took a swipe at Trump and his running mate JD Vance for not hitting the campaign trail on Labor Day, declaring them as “anti-labor,” a stark contrast to Kamala Harris’s Labor Day blitz.

The vice president herself attended two rallies (one with Joe Biden), while a fleet of surrogates – including her VP pick Tim Walz, his wife Gwen and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff – were sent on her behalf to make remarks at seasonal events across swing states.

Harris has raised so much for her presidential campaign that she’s giving some away

Wednesday 4 September 2024 06:30 , Oliver O’Connell

Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign has raised more than half-a-billion dollars since the start of late July, and she’s now giving some of the haul away to other Democrats.

The vice president’s camp raised $540m in just over a month as she continues to gain momentum following the departure of President Joe Biden from the ticket and his endorsement of her on July 21.

Control of Congress will decide if Harris will be able to enact her agenda if she wins in November, and while the presidential race between her and former President Donald Trump remains close, so too do a number of down-ballot races for the Senate and the House.

The Harris campaign and the Democratic National Committee are now sending almost $25 million to campaigns on the congressional and state levels. They said it’s “the largest transfer ever in a presidential cycle.”

The former president has bragged to those close to him that his eye for talent is equal to that of the Hall of Fame coach, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest of all time, sources told The New York Times.

Has Trump finally admitted he lost the 2020 election?

Wednesday 4 September 2024 02:00 , Josh Marcus

Days after he claimed he had “every right” to interfere with the 2020 presidential election results, Donald Trump admits that he “lost by a whisker.”

During a 45-minute interview with popular podcaster Lex Fridman, the former president revived his false claims that the election “was a fraud” but conceded that he did in fact lose.

Trump’s false and inflated claims about elections, which span more than a decade, have fuelled his 2024 ambitions; spurious legal challenges to results; and legislation and Republican-led rule changes that have tried to do what he failed to in court.

Trump’s push to move hush money case to federal court fails once again

Wednesday 4 September 2024 01:52 , Josh Marcus

A federal judge has once again rejected Donald Trump’s attempts to move his hush money case out of a Manhattan courtroom, a last-ditch effort to overturn his conviction and avoid sentencing after a jury found him guilty on 34 felony counts this spring.

Trump will be sentenced by New York Justice Juan Merchan on September 18.

The former president’s lawyers had argued in court filings that the case and evidence against him should be tossed out under the Supreme Court’s “immunity” ruling, which determined that presidents are absolutely immune from criminal prosecution for their “official” acts in office.

As scramble for funding continues, these are the seats Republicans fear they won’t be able to contest

Wednesday 4 September 2024 01:30 , Oliver O’Connell

Republicans are growing increasingly concerned about their ability to contest a number of races as the money gap between the GOP and the Democrats widens.

Last month, the leader of the largest Super PAC supporting the House Republicans, Dan Conston, the president of the Congressional Leadership Fund, told donors that he needed $35 million more to take on the Democrats, according to Politico.

Similarly, the campaign chair for the Senate Republicans, Steve Daines, said, “The left-wing billionaires are massively outspending us. That’s what’s keeping me up at night” during his speech at the Republican National Convention.

How Georgia’s pro-Trump election board could help him steal an election

Tuesday 3 September 2024 23:30 , Oliver O’Connell

Alex Woodward writes:

At a rally in Georgia days before a crucial vote at the state’s election board, Donald Trump praised three of the board’s five members as “pit bulls fighting for victory.”

“I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the Georgia State Election Board is in a very positive way,” Trump said in Atlanta on August 3. “They’re on fire. They’re doing a great job.”

Those members — Rick Jeffares, Janelle King and Janice Johnston — ultimately voted for sweeping rule changes to how counties can certify election rules in a state that the former president lost by narrow margins in 2020, and where he is now criminally charged for his attempts to reverse that loss.
