The latest data from the Cincinnati Police Department shows fewer people have been shot in the city compared to last year.
Year to date, shootings citywide have dropped about 4.5% compared to last year. The number of juveniles shot this year is less than half the number during the same period last year. By this time last year, 39 juveniles had been shot compared to 18 this year.
The number of shootings is still about 9% higher than the low violence of 2018 and 2019 preceding the pandemic but about 25% lower than the spike in violence in 2020.
Over-the-Rhine, West End and Roselawn have all seen significantly fewer shootings during the first half of 2024, driving the reductions. However, violence has risen in some neighborhoods, and in the past three weeks, the city has experienced two mass shootings.
The shooting in Corryville early Monday left one wounded and three people dead, including a father and son. A second mass shooting at a Madisonville park on June 15 left five people wounded.
Avondale has seen a spike in violence and a doubling of homicides. During the first five months of this year, 17 people were shot in the neighborhood and six of those victims died, according to Cincinnati police data. During the same period last year, 12 people were shot in Avondale and three of them died.
